Teee, congratulations on a great post! It's clear, concise, balanced, and very well written. You should post it on gather.com.

May I add that if someone like Caroline Kennedy, who has spent her life trying to stay away from the limelight, is willing to sacrifice that, I can't help but trust that her motives are altruistic. She is an intelligent, well educated woman. She is a lawyer and the author of several insightful books on, among other things, constitutional rights. I think she's well qualified to be a U.S. Senator. My only concern is, is she tough enough to withstand the bullshit in Washington, D.C.?

I too am from NY and would personally like to have a Senator that has some experience other than watching people in their family do the job or doing some charity work and being famous.
Caroline or Fran?
I choose Andrew Cuomo.

God, are those our only two choices? So all that matters to get this is that you're famous and female? How about Miss Piggy instead?

There are plenty of people (high-profile celebrities and ordinary people with the means to pursue their political aspirations) who have taken senate seats without experience who ended up doing quite well, and if these women are driven, motivated and passionately concerned about addressing the big issues which our state and our country faces, then there is no reason to bitch. As a junior senator you don't have much say, anyway. Your job is to listen to your constituents and to report their desires to the senate, to attempt to push legislature so that these goals are met. Anyone with the ambition to change and do well can accomplish that. If anything, the naivete of a humanitarian that is not tainted with dirty politics-as-usual tactics of Washington would probably accomplish a hell of a lot more good for our state than some old, greedy douchebag who is seasoned at lying and manipulation.

I think both Fran and Caroline are awesome, though I've read a bit more of Caroline's direct quotes and aims than Fran's. I also don't understand what the big deal is about the "dynasty." If people are happy with the Kennedys being at the foreground of political undertakings then why aim to keep them out? Some people, or, in other cases, some families, are destined for greatness--and prove their capacity to be a positive force in politics by action-- and should thus be given the opportunity to lead. Sure, it may look "suspicious" that a family has had political pull in the US for half a century, but consider their financial means, their great education, their ambitious and honorable goals and general disposition in society. It's not like they have a central patriarch with ulterior motives hiding in a castle barking orders to maintain the status quo of the Kennedy's unending power! They're good at what they do. As are the Clintons. Republicans thought that the Bushes would have a similar success with their "legacy," though obviously this was a dismal failure. Bushes are clearly not meant to lead. But is it a surprise that smart, ambitious, altruistic people who grow up around some of the most brilliant and giving politicians that the world has seen would seek inspiration from their kin and decide to follow in their footsteps? I don't think so. While it's true that rich, powerful families tend to perpetuate their existence, I really don't think that it's necessarily a bad thing if their hearts are in the right place. Enough with the bullshit conspiracies!!!
