Twilight Sequel Appears to Be Doomed from the Start

I have a feeling that the studio behind Twilight’s sequel, New Moon, is going to end up making a gigantic mess of what could be another blockbuster. Basically, they’re trying to rush the film out to capitalize on all the buzz around the film right now. As Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson are still wandering around the globe hating life at the first film’s international premieres, pre-production is slated to start on the sequel in just a few days. Rumors indicate that the first film’s director, Catherine Hardwicke, wasn’t fired, but rather passed on the second film because she knew that the rushed production schedule would wind up disastrous. They still don’t have a script in place, and filming is supposed to start in mid-March. This is bad.

Plus, word is that producers want to oust the adorable Taylor Lautner as Jacob, since they don’t feel he can carry the heftier role that Jacob plays in the sequel. There’s also concern about the plot as a whole transferring well to the big screen. Said Catherine Hardwicke last month: “You have to get the chemistry as strong between Jacob and Bella as it was between Bella and Edward. You also have to do something with that arc: She’s in love with somebody, he disappears, she falls in love with someone else, and the first guy comes back. Movies like Pearl Harbor have tried it. It absolutely didn’t work.”

And they’re still scrambling to find qualified Native American actors to play Jacob’s werewolf clan.

Seriously.

It’s fucking impossible these days to find a decent Native American werewolf-clan member. I feel your pain.

What do you guys think? Will New Moon make bank at the theaters no matter what? Or should the studio take their time and put some more effort into this film?

  • YES! I’m so glad they’re changing Jacob, Lautner could not play the character without destroying him. I’m still hoping for steven strait :)

  • “It’s fucking impossible these days to find a decent Native American werewolf-clan member. I feel your pain. ”

I completely LOL’d and choked on my noodles when I read that =)

  • Aww Lautner was cute. I don’t really give a shit. Twilight’s OK. I’m just waiting for Harry Potter to come out in effing JULY. Aggghhh!!!

  • yeahhh beet, i was going to email you about this, i read it on perez’s blog earlier this evening.
OMG they better not fuck this up. that’s all i’m saying.

  • apparently yes they should change the lautner its not like his not cute or he cant make the character be that good its just that it is important they have to find someone who can have the chemistry as kristen and rob has because this is a love story and i read the book she did feel inlove so they need to work on the chemistry between characters.. and they should let catherine do the production and directing she is the best for it.. she knows the consequences.. no need to rush the new moon series.. people can wait.. make it good.. make it a block buster MAN!!!

  • hmm they should put more effort in to it or it will suck…just like the first one. but i whatever it still will make shit load of money no matter what happens.

  • steven strait played the lead guy in the covenant right? the one that got the girl at the end? i haven’t seen that movie in years.
he doesn’t look very native american-ish. hmmm, i think taylor lautner is okay, his voice is a bit too clear and higher than i expected for jacob. for the second film he should definitely practice speaking in a deeper voice.
aw, i hate if they get broken up, taylor, rob and kristen seem to have a lot of chemistry, almost like the harry potter trio.

  • NO
I absolutely loved Lautner. I actually think it would be a shame to change any of the original cast. I think they were pretty strong, all of them.
As much as I’d love to see more Twilight, I’m a fan, it be a complete waste if it was shit. I liked the first, it wasn’t amazing, but I didn’t HATE it.

SUCH a shame to completely vary the second from the first. Exept for the SFXs. Just because they move fast and jump far doesn’t mean they defy the laws of physics.

  • It’ll bank immediately, no doubt. But it could be hung out to dry within days. I’m very into the quality over quantity.
And I’ll die a little inside if they replace Lautner.
Actually, the original cast was pretty strong, I believe, so replacing any would be a shame.

  • Dude the movie is screwed. Look, “We’ve seen the light and it’s Twilight” producers: the fanbase would rather wait a good year and a half and get a good movie out of it, then to see it next year and have it look like shit. But then I don’t care, as long as I get to be an extra this time, cause I wanna fuck with Rob Pattz…Hair.

  • they need to take their time and make it right! A good franchise will still be good years down the road. THey shouldnt fuck it up.

  • I was a fan of the books, so the movie ruined it for me. Ugh. Hope thy don’t rush this in the end… The first one had a decent timeframe and it still sucked!

  • I hate it when studios take a great book and screw up the film adaptation and then we’re stuck with it. Lloyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain would have been amazing movies in the LoTR footsteps, but Disney got their greedy little paws on it years ago, made a HORRIBLE cheesy cartoon out of The Black Cauldron (not even the first book in the series, dumbasses) and now that’s all we’ve got for movies for those great books instead of a 5-movie series that could have been visually stunning and would have drawn the LoTR and Potter crowds. You’d think in film school, the first thing they teach on the first day is Rule #1: Don’t fuck up your film.

  • oh I hope they dont rush it. I will go see it no matter what but only because I am a fan of the books. It will be like Harry Potter where everyone goes to all the movies even if they know it will probably suck. With harry potter the first one was pretty good.. and the second was okay.. but i didnt really like the third because they made all these changes… and the 4th was aight because Rob Pattinson was in it.. haha.. anyways.. I go see the HP movies when they come out but thats it- just once.
I think they should keep Taylor. The kid is still young, right? I mean he is like 16- Jacob is supposed to be around that age in the first movie but then bulk up and get all manly in the second book. My little bro got tons taller between 16 and 17 and I dont doubt that Taylor could do the same. He will have to work out a shitload though.
I hope they dont rush it. maybe they are rushing it so the vamps dont get wrinkles and all. because, you know, the actors are sooo old.

wouldnt it be awesome if they replaced edward or bella? that would be soo dumb. I dont know If I would go to that lol.
If they replaced Daniel Radcliffe in HP I would see that though. That pussy cant even bother to wear contacts.

  • They sure as fuck better not mess this movie up. I will personally find the director and slit their slimy little throat….ugh sorry but I love these books. And taylor lautner is so adorable!

  • They shouldn’t rush it. It’ll make money regardless but it should be thought out and planned. Oh the problems of having a small studio do major movies. Summit is messing up.

  • Steven Strait in the Covenant doesn’t look that native-american, but look at him in Sky High as Warren Peace. That is Jacob for me. :)

  • @ Briana:

    I agree with you 100%.

I really, really hope that they don’t replace Jacob, because in interviews Taylor sounded like he was really looking forward to playing Jacob in New Moon, and to take that away from him is just cruel.

  • They need to take the time to make it good otherwise the producers and director may be burned alive by screaming teenage girls. Theres plenty of attractive native americans in Oklahoma so they could probably find plenty of werewolf-clan members there, well probably just clan members, sans the werewolf.

  • They will get my $8.50 or whatever tickets are going for these days.

But If they plan on making all four into movies and this next one sucks (more than the first when they should have the money behind them to make it good), then I won’t see any more.

Okay…that’s a lie. I’m addicted to the stinking series. I’m 31 years old and addicted to kid-lit.

    Pathetic.

  • I think this movie as AMAZING potential, just not next November. I realize that its really big right now, but so was H.P. and they didn’t rush that and it was awesome. I think its a disgrace to the books and to the author to rush out a piece of shit, no matter how hot Robert Pattinson is.

  • Gah. This is bad, real bad.
I havent even watched Twilight, and I’m scared.
I love the books. and i hope the movies do them justice.
Honestly.. take some time to make new moon. It’s not worth it.. spending millions on a movie and having it crash and burn. but hey.. whatever, I’ll still watch it, and hopefully love it.

  • I’m glad theere replacing taylor. I was really annoyed with his acting in twilight I couldn’t get over the fact that he’s shark boy and jacob is suppose to be the competition for edward I mean really. they should of picked someone who would actually give rob pattinson some competition. I hope they find the right guy I doubt it though :)

  • I liked the kid who played Jacob, plus he’s already signed for the next movie & he got BUILT to play a werewolf, i mean seriously – he’s jacked now. Plus, it’s Eclipse that really needs to be worried over, the 3rd movie could totes redeem the second if it was sucky and i think that the rushed time line would be fine since most of the actors suck anyway.

  • UM EXCUSE ME?! TAYLOR SAVED TWILIGHT!
no lie, if he’s not in new moon i’m totally boycotting.
I love the books, and i didn’t even like the character jacob untill i saw Taylor play him in Twilight.
ahah btw im native american i’ll play leah :]

  • I think Weiz can do it. Catherine did a great job but a really good director can pull it off, and it makes sense since Rob Pattinson certainly looks older than 17 already! They really don’t have a choice because time is critical. I will be disappointed if they can’t get all 4 books in because the 4th book shows critical pieces to the story. I loved Taylor but guys he isn’t right for the next sequence. We need Edward competition in the physical so they need another hunk to play Jacob. He needs to be tall and gorgeous. Rob isn’t the only hunk in town. There are lots of them.

  • ok so i loved the movie. im not the type of person that would, but i did im sure the second one will be just as good. but im not liking that theres not alot of edward ): lol

  • The first film wasn’t that great…the second can only get worse lol. And judging from the way they are trying to rush it I’m sure it will be.

Kudos to kicking out Tayler Lautner. Sorry Miss Beet, but he looked like a mexican in a wig with a fake tan. :/

  • they should definitely slow down and do a good job. i haven’t read the sequel, but i hear that it is so much more deeper and intensified than twilight. and to play that accurately, it takes a lot of redos to get that across to the screen and to portray that type of emotion.
