Twilight Series Getting a New Director for New Moon

She delivered the biggest opening weekend ever for a female film director, but Catherine Hardwicke will not be back to direct the Twilight sequel, New Moon.

“I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct New Moon,” she said in a statement. “Directing Twilight has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel—it is a great story.”

“Timing” my ass. She got the boot.

What do you guys think?

Does the Twilight series need a different director?

  • why would they fire her after how well it did? i mean, i know it would have done well no matter what, but still.
    i’m seriously asking. why?

  • holding it up to other tween and teen movies, it was kinda sad. she should of taken time and not turned in a rush job to editors and CG crew. (and yes 3 weeks early is a rush job)

  • The movie wasn’t that good, the only reason why it did so well is b/c of the books and b/c of Rob Pattinson. i think it can be done soo much better.

  • I suppose they might want a better director so that the critics will hate it a little less. You know, broaden their audience by giving it more credibility.

Not that Catherine Hardwicke isn’t a good director, but perhaps Twilight wasn’t really right up her alley.

  • Obivoulsy the have to give her the boot.
    she sucked at directing twilight
the movie was a big fucking disappointment.
hope the new director does better than this piece of shit

  • I am sooooo happy they’re getting a different director. She did a HORRIBLE job with that movie…it was way too choppy. Now I actually might see New Moon instead of writing it off.

  • thank god…she is unnerving…
and i think rabbit is right…the movie is only good because of the book and the cast…i think somebody else can do a better job…

  • i loved the books, HATED the movie. i sat through the whole movie thinking, “WHAT THE FARK.” Very disappointed. Very, VERY disappointed. Blame it on the budget, the cast, or whatever, I blame it on the director. It was shithole.

  • I loved the book, but it’s true…the movie was not that good. I thought that they could’ve done a much better job with the movie…and now since the success and money that Twilight brought in, they can afford to have New Moon directed better. I’m not complaining, I think they need to do these books justice.

  • maybe the next one won’t be so cheesy! the books were cheesy of course, but the movie was just ridiculous. it needs new direction majorly.

  • thank fucking god. i can only imagine how horrendous she’d make half the book––i.e. bella being catatonic.

  • yeah, it definitely needs a new director…the hype made the movie do well & although i mostly enjoyed it despite its issues, my husband who is way more objective thought the movie sucked ass & was laughable. he thought edward was good, but thought bella was horrible & very unlikeable.

  • This is good news. I’ve never liked Hardwicke’s Indy style she throws into EVERYTHING she makes. Plus the action sequences were so girly (no offense).

  • as an avid twilight reader i was excited for the movie and completely let down. somehow everyone is failing to notice the awful direction the movie had. robert pattinsons character looked constipated the entire time… when kristen stewart was “Bitten” by the vampire instead of being in pain she looked like she was having a multiple orgasm attack… and the general running/jumping vampire thing was way too far fetched and cheesy. i felt overall the book failed to translate to the screen.

i dont think either of the aforementioned actors/actresses are brilliant, but i think that a better director would have stopped their constipated/orgasmic acting and directed it in a better way.

WAY TO GO FOR A NEW DIRECTOR!

  • It need a new director- it really missed the love story to come to the screen they got distracted with the action.

  • well I did like the movie and the tone and everything, but I can see how a new director would help… as far as the action sequence(s) goes, well… yeah they need help- the direction was mediocre… like I thought the actors did good but in some places you could almost hear them thinking out loud like ‘are you really going to make me say these stupid lines?!’

Im excited to see who’s up next and how well new moon does.

  • i think it will be good to see how a different director chooses to adapt the film from the new moon book. i have to say that when i compare the twilight film to the book, i am not happy with it but the movie itself was okay. i thought some of the acting was a bit cheesy, i.e. bella’s friend’s at school. and on perezhilton.com, it says that they are pushing for the movie to hit theaters in 2009. so excited, i just hope the rushing doesn’t ruin the end product.

  • Here’s hoping the new heir to the Twilight fortune can direct some inflection into Bella’s tone. That would be something worth paying for!

  • I feel it’s more that she refused than she got fired. She talked earlier about how she wouldn’t do the second one unless the got the budget needed to make it really good and not look cheap. The studio maintained that the next movie didn’t need a bigger budget, etc.

I say she jumped ship to avoid being blamed if the movies blow.

  • Tracy’s post makes alot of sense. It sounds like they want her to pump out another movie really fast to avoid the actors from aging… damn vampires don’t age… I liked the movie because I like the books. If I wasn’t a fan of the books, I would have thought the film was a low budget indie film. If I were her I too would want to go out on top….. Summit keeping her budget down will only drag her down. She made the right move.

  • Hey it would be cool to see Tim Burton direct it (and be given creative control)! That would be awesome!

  • I wasn’t really excited after watching Twilight. The little girls were too busy squealing every time they saw Edward.

It was really rushed, because it seemed like they fell in love in a week, so she could have done a better job at directing the scenes where she could have the audience understand what was actually happening.

But she’s not the only reason the movie lacked, it was also the actors and dialogues they had to use. Ick.

  • Thank God! I 100% loved the books from the very moment i started reading them. I was hooked on them completely, and finished the four novels in a week. Twilight was one of the best books because it has so much suspense in everything. From Bella getting to know Edward, until the end of the book when .. we’ll if you read them, you know what happens. (: But the movie totaly didn’t show any of this. It went very fast, and I think if someone who didn’t read the book saw this- they’d be totaly lost.

For example, they “fell in love” totaly too fast, and i’m not sure everyone knew how extremely tough it was for Edward and Bella. Edward especially. It just seemed way too easy. The Cullens were also missing a lot from the movie, and they had a GREAT GREAT deal to do with the book.

Overall, it just didn’t translate well. I’m glad she won’t be doing New Moon. Hopefully they’ll get someone to write a more decent and easier to understand script!

  • The movie needs more than a new director, it needs a new cast. I love the books, but I cannot watch a whole movie about Jacob with Taylor Lautner playing him. Or watch Kristin’s version of Bella. She can’t act for shit. And while Robert Pattinson will never be my version of Edward, he was possibly the best actor in the film, except for maybe Esme and Charlie.

  • That is AWESOME! The same thing happened to Harry Potter and all of those movies got ruined, I am so glad that the same thing is happening to the Twilight Series. Harry Potter deserved so much more but J.K. Rowling got greedy and ruined it for all her fans. She shouldn’t have started filming them until the series was done.
It is amazing that Twilight is getting the same treatment, it deserves it so much. They are some of the worst books out there and I hope the movies come out even worse.

  • i really dont care that she quit.
really i loved the movie but it wasnt anywhere close to as good as the books.
it left out all of the little but important scence.. and to me the movie was kinda to funny for the book. idk i think all the people playing in it did A VERY GREAATTT job they all better stay in it but i just think that it will be better with a new director who reads the books and wants to keep the movie just as the book.
and i really think that everyone here wouldnt mind sitting through a 2.5/3hr movie as long as its just like the book.
i loved this books read them all in 3 days total.. watched the movie 10 times and wanted to cry at the end everytime becuase it didnt blow me away it was just ok/good.
i dont care if she got fired or quit. the movie comes out in a year and i cant wait. this director better do a hell of a lot better.
i love all the books and cant wait for new moon even kno i got to sit down and watch jacob the whole time : / will cry the whole time but still cant wait!
    I <3 ROBERT SOOO SEXYYYY

  • i agree with most of you guys, i’m really curious to see in which direction the new director will make the movies go. like some of you have mentioned, i felt like the emotions that were encrypted in the books were rushed and that ruined the whole mood for me. then it became a drag to sit in the theater for 2 hours. i loved rob pattinson as edward, i like him in so many ways, haha; but i also had mixed feelings about kristen playing bella- i think she did fit the mental image i had for bella but he voice was kind of weird and then again i couldn’t picture it any other way.
a bunch of my friends and i watch it together and only a couple of us had read the book and the ones who didn’t read them absolutely loved the film. hah, and everyone who did read them felt ripped off.
books are so much better when we imagine them. i kind of want to see another director’s take on the first book. maybe someone could’ve done a better job…? i dunno.

  • oh yay! i mean i like indie films, i just dont think twilight should be one. new moon is gonna rock!

  • it’s because she lacks experience with special FX and if you’ve read the books… new moon & eclipse will both require A LOT of them. werewolves and all that…sorry if i just ruined that plot point for anyone but jacob black should be a sex bomb next movie!

  • I’ve read all thre books 5 times and I am absolutly obsessed! I think Robert Pattinson was as perfect as it gets to being Edward. Also Kristen Stewart fits what I imagined Bella as.I don’t care who becomes the director I just want New Moon to be great. I think the firt movie was ok, but it was way to rushed. Also so many things were out of place. One major thing was that Bella didn’t know about Edward being in her room at night until after ther scene in the meadow. Right before they get i Bella’s car to go home from the meadow is where they have theirfirst kiss. NOT IN HER BEDROOM! All in all it totally screwed up the book and I hope whoever directs the next 3 follows the book. If they do that I don’t cre if it is 3 hours long!

  • It was ok but I can’t wait for new moon they better not rush it like they did the first time

  • i have read all of the twilight saga and i think that the books are amazing!!! the movie was great aswell, but it wasnt as good as the book, but what movies are lol.
i think a new director could be quite cool !!! hopefully new moon isnt as rushed as twilight was !!! i cant wait for new moon!!! =D twilight love =D x.x.

  • I think it was good… but it should have been made into a part 1 and part 2 because i was following along w/ what i remembered in the book ad it skipped a lot of parts i wish they would take the time to find exciting parts and make it worth the time and money to see the movie… good luck to the next director!

  • In the movie it looks like the vampires are wearing foundation and bright red lipstick… they probably were but they should make it a little less noticable!!!

  • In the movie it looks like the cullens are wearing foundation and bright red lipstick… tey probably were but they should make it a little less noticable.
Good luck to the next director!!!!

  • Your right. Twilight was rushed. It was horrible. The new director better to a better job. Bella in the movie was not clusmy not really in love with edward and she looked like a vamp. Robert i guess was good. Action looked horrible i mean come on. And nothing in the movie seemed like the book.

  • The movie did suck or bite or whatever. She did not include a lot of good stuff and she added in a lot of trash if you ask me. I am so glad there is a new director. I need to be rewarded for my loyal readership!! Let us cross our fingers for no more hot messes. The cast was great.
