“She’s scary smart. But smart only takes you so far. She also has an amazing knack, perhaps more than any other star, for knowing how to shape a public image.”

Bonnie Fuller, the former editor of Us Weekly and Star magazines, discussing Angelina Jolie.

The New York Times has an extensive article today discussing how Angelina Jolie has manipulated the media into creating a sugar-sweet public image for her.

  • scary, i believe… but scary smart?? i am soooo not buying it…i will say however, she is a saavy celeb when it comes to her image & the image of her family…

  • I’ve seen her in interviews, and I believe she is a smartie, as well as sincere. She’s pretty fierce and never relies on cliches.

  • @ Donkey Punch…you are nuts! Gia was great…it really felt like a genuine love relationship between her and that photographer.

    no homo. :-)

  • Are we really all that surprised? That she manipulates the media? Sienna Miller could stand to take a few notes on how it’s done.

  • I loved Gia…

And I dont think admitting you liked someones husband, and then actually dating him, makes u seem sugar sweet. But I really dont think shes doing so much good in this world just for image.. come on now!

  • a wonderful person will go out of their way NOT to break up a marriage even if it makes them unhappy… she is selfish with personal issues and in the way she keeps her father away from her.

For the big picture, she appears to be a great humanitarian. As long as it is not her personal happiness she has to forgo.

  • Ha! This is great.

So, how does someone who manipulates the press so well end up with so much of it being negative?

I definitely get the sense that she is fab in an interview – come on, everyone who interviews her comes across as seduced by her charm-and-disarm routine. But the media only does so much based on what you say – they care far more about what you do that will sell.

I think Angie’s “crafting” of her image is far more a reflection of us than of her. How on earth are we this obsessed with someone who doesn’t even have a matching pair of gold men on her mantle? Because she is off-beat, and may any day do something unexpected, and we love her for it. By loving her, we give her power – power to sway a magazine to encourage her to keep feeding the lion.

Of course, nobody with a picture of Lindsay vomiting on herself is going to withhold it for fear of retribution – but when the information is grey, it’s easier to nudge it toward black… or white. Lucky for beet, gossip columnists aren’t held to the same (libel…slander…first amendment…) standards as the New York Times. Not that I don’t love beet, but we all know it’s true. The grey area is where gossip lives.

  • I’m smart! I’m having more babies! I’m smart! I’m with Brad Pitt! I care! I want my privacy! Here’s some pics of ME!!! I’m smart! Enough already.

  • she saves millions a yr by not having any pr- brad dropped his pr, too…if more stars do this, the pr industry might be in trouble…

  • I like how we’ve put all the blame of Brad and Jennifer’s break up on Angelina. Hello it takes two to have an affair. I think if Brad was happy with Jennifer this wouldn’t have turned out the way it did. Hell we probably wouldn’t have even heard anything about it if he would’ve stayed with Jennifer.

  • oh yeah….scary liar more like it

and what is up with her face? it changes everytime there is a new red carpet to walk

one of these days her face is just going to slide right off of her face and then, yeah, she will be scary…..not scary smart, but more like scary skeleton …. ahahahahahahahaha

  • oh yeah……scary liar

and what is up with her face? Everytime she walks a new red carpet her face is different….

One day that face will just slide right off of her, and then , yes she will be scary, scary skeleton
