“Watching the returns on election night was an amazing experience. Barack Obama is our new president. Change is here. I, like millions of Americans, felt like we had taken a giant step towards equality. We were watching history.

This morning, when it was clear that Proposition 8 had passed in California, I can’t explain the feeling I had. I was saddened beyond belief. Here we just had a giant step towards equality and then on the very next day, we took a giant step away.

I believe one day a ‘ban on gay marriage’ will sound totally ridiculous. In the meantime, I will continue to speak out for equality for all of us.”

Ellen Degeneres, in a statement released Wednesday.

  • The Mormon Church spent over $20 million to pass this ban on equal rights. The Mormon Church should no longer receive tax exempt status for their political perversion into the political process….The seperation of Church and State is a fundamental part of our democracy….KEEP YOUR RELIGION OUT OF OUR GOVERNMENT!
This will backfire on the Morman Church….The Hate will come back to haunt them.

  • I love Ellen. And I love gay people. And I love equality.

I totally agree. I wish California hadn’t done this…. I voted NO of course.. it just made Obama’s win so bittersweet… I am still so happy he won…. and so proud that our country elected a qualified African-American…

I just cannot wait until, one day, gay people have the same rights as the rest of us.

  • i never thought obama would actually win, and i never thought proposition 8 would actually pass. i cried my eyes out over both, for different reasons.

how can a person feel so full of hope for change…and so heartsick over a move to promote bigotry at the same time??

i’m straight and unmarried, but marriage is a *civil rights* issue and it’s discrimination pure and simple to prevent two consenting adults who love each other to take on the joys and responsibilities of marriage. it’s not our right as an american people to make illegal what we aren’t comfortable with.

  • Ugh. I’m getting into ridiculous facebook arguments with this mormon girl because she voted yes on 102 in Arizona. She thinks it’s right because it doesn’t deny the gays any rights, it saves people like her from being called bigots down the line from people like me who voted no. Their small-mindedness is so frustrating it makes me sick. If this is what it does to you, then I’m glad I don’t believe in Jesus. Makes me wonder if he’d be as ashamed of his followers as I am, or if he’d be just another jerk holding a sign outside a church. Maybe he’ll stop by and give me a better idea.

And I don’t mean to persecute EVERYONE who’s Christian. I realize that some of you have a sense of humanity as well as your religion. And I applaud you for that. Thank you.

  • I agree Hiedikins. If you are religious, and believe that you are a product of God.. THEN WHY WOULD HE MAKE U GAY IF ITS A SIN???? Ugh it just makes me so ill the hypocracy in religion. Hopefully one day people will get passed this issue, like they have so many others. It’s not right for us to make decisions for other people!

  • Wow. From what I know of the Mormons they are really not in any position to be critical of someone else’s definition of marriage…

…seeing as how their definition has long included the need to ask, “Which wife tonight?”

  • Beet,

It is really moving that you are able to understand this. I simply cannot thank you enough for your entries in this blog and in SIAM. Thank you for pointing out the irony. My heart rejoices about Obama’s victory. I am in awe, I really am.. America is such an amazing country, yet the victory is quite bittersweet. My only consolation that perhaps one day we could ALL be equal. I have to believe that change is coming.

  • EQUAL CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ALL!
    EQUAL CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ALL!
    EQUAL CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ALL!

    It’s coming, people. It’s progress. It’s now.

Whoever, whatever tries and get in the way of it will get…

    RUN-THE-FUCK-OVER. deal.

  • Hi Beet – you have politicized this site so much, you have lost me forever – I came here to escape….time to go, thanks for the laughs over the years.

  • i think we should look at the bright side- where i live there were yes on 8 signs all over the place (the churches really pushed it) and i never really expected it not to pass (plus i pretty much hate people in general and don’t expect much from them). i think the fact that is passed by such a narrow margin is a sign of progress. yay, only slightly more than half of us voters are hatemongers and or pawns who voted what our churches told us to!!!

  • I completely agree with Ellen! Look back to the days of segregation. Segregation allowed racist people to openly practice hatred against blacks. And it was the norm back then.

Decades later after it was abolished, we look back on those times and wonder HOW could such a thing have been allowed back then? I believe in years to come, (hopefully sooner than later) Gay marriage will officially be permitted everywhere in the US, and it wont be a talking point anymore. We will be looking back on this “issue” of Gay marriage, and wonder…How could it have been such a big deal back then? And those who oppose Gay marriage will be forced to oppose it in secret just like so many racists still in this country practice their hatred in secret.

  • hrm. i’m split over this. i agree that everyone deserves equal rights but i was born and raised in a very religous family, where i had to go to chuch every sunday. i was taught that being homosexual is a sin, and it does say it in the bible, but i just can’t bring myself to dislike someone just because their gay. and in my heart, i just feel like i can’t deny someone the chance to get married just because they love somone of the same sex. except when i feel that, i feel like i’m going against what god says. ahh!
so i say, let people get married to whoever they want. its not hurting you, so leave them alone.

  • The people have spoken AGAIN. No one wants this. It is not about equal rights, it is about what it right and wrong.

  • Right and wrong according to who Mike? You? Your religion? Your beliefs? It is not right to deny people their civil rights. Even if you view it as wrong, that is not your decision to make, it’s God’s. Worry about you own “sins”, not someone else’s.

  • Obama was running as a black candidate who felt -marriage- is between a man and a woman. How could anyone be surprised that someone who vote for Obama voted yes to prop 8. …whatever..at least I didn’t have to wait for those return on this prop. And I totally disagree with ellen. This was a giant step forward and the fact that there are more giant steps to take forward doesn’t set it back. Especially if we compare where we’ve been to where we are. I know you are, as someone put, passionate about this prop, beet. Understandably, and I don’t wanna be the one to stop you. Im not. BUT COME, THE FUCK, ON. I feel like Im in bible study class every time Im on here and the hand of the clock is forever stuck a minute before the bell rings and saves me. I think you should cover more politics this way most of the political posts don’t solicit the daily Leviticus and Martin and John (religion) ect being brought up. Unless of course you get a daily pap shot up Paris’s crotch and there’s a bible up there. Im just saying.

  • Not worried about anyone else’s sins except my own. Obviously, more people agreed with me than everyone who now feels there Civil Rights are being ignored. This has nothing to do with Civil Rights. I’ve yet to see anyone denied the freedom to do whatever with whoever. No one is knocking doors down and dragging people of to jail.

Good God people, it’s over. Move on.

  • “I’ve yet to see anyone denied the freedom to do whatever with whoever.”

Mmmkay, the “whatever” would be marriage and the “whoever” would be people of the same sex. How can you say you haven’t seen that denied?

Move on?? Ummm, you’re on this site debating it aren’t you? Maybe you should take your own advise and move on.

  • Bye Chaz…. it’s a huge bummer when people start becoming interested in things that actually matter, huh? Why don’t you go check out perez or some other trash….. oh shit… even he talks about charities and stuff….. :( POOOOOOOOOOOR CHAZ

  • Not worried about anyone else’s sins except my own. Obviously, more people agreed with me than everyone who now feels there Civil Rights are being ignored. There is nothing logical in Mike’s statement. Like I said before, can we deny the reproductive rights of people like Mike, who lack critical thinking skills and want to impose their hateful and dull witted beliefs on others? For the sake of humanity, I don’t want them in my gene pool. I think the idea of bigots procreating is more frightening than 2 gay people who fall in love, adopt, and want to marry.

The people have spoken AGAIN. No one wants this. It is not about equal rights, it is about what it right and wrong.

Who is this “NO ONE”??? The last time I checked it didn’t pass with 100%. Dumb ass. It wasn’t even some crazy majority. It is about EQUAL RIGHTS AND WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG. EQUAL RIGHTS= what is right.

God I hope you don’t live in California. If so, you are probably in rich bitchy California, such as O.C., or crappy farmy California. I live up in Berkeley. I could find a SHITLOAD of people who disagree with you.

And I totally agree with Indigo— What are you saying, Mike.—- move on, move on? We are on this sight to talk about our feelings, and our distress about this situation. You are arguing as well. You obviously feel passionately about this as well, or you wouldn’t be wasting your time on it.

So why should we move on?

If you think this shit is over, you’re insane. Gay marriage will be legalized. It may take a lot longer than some of us want, but it will happen. And it will happen in my lifetime.

If you don’t like it, move to a more conservative state. Or fuck it, move to Alaska.

  • I think Mike would be better suited for Afghanistan, modern day Iran, or Iraq where intolerance is applauded. His rhetoric seems to work better there.

  • Everyone has pretty much covered why they are upset or elated at this result, so I won’t step into that fray.

I will point out though, one major difference between the Obama campaign and those against Proposition 8 has been the approach each campaign has taken to keep or win over the voters that were not in favor of Obama and against Prop. 8.

Generally speaking, Obama’s message was one of hope for EVERYONE, not just African-Americans or Democrats. From what I can tell (I am out of the US/CA and so I have only seen bits and pieces) those against Proposition 8’s position has been one reprimanding people for not agreeing with permitting gay marriage. Now, those anti-Prop 8 people are protesting and demonstrating the issue, filing lawsuits, and seeking petition support.

In my humble opinion, opponents of Proposition 8’s position and activity has been very disorganized and polarizing. Obviously, there were not enough votes to strike down Prop 8… so the anti-Prop 8 people should be (and should have from the beginning) working on swaying those voters. Telling people they are stupid and wrong will result in people digging their heels in to defend their vote (whether they felt strongly or not when casting their vote). Show those swing voters why its morally and fiscally beneficial for them to oppose Proposition 8… like Obama’s campaign, show EVERYONE why Proposition 8 does more harm than good to EVERYONE rather than just a specific population.

  • @ Mike – it’s pretty easy for you to say move on when this issue doesn’t affect you! So now on top of being narrow-minded you’re selfish.

  • @Mike

This IS about right and wrong. Plug any other group into this proposition and you’ll see it’s wrong.

The official ballot title for Proposition 8 is “Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry.” So Mike, can you understand it’s wrong if it said instead: “Eliminates Right of Black Couples to Marry?” Or “Eliminates Right of Jewish Couples to Marry?” Our government should not allow any citizen’s rights to be eliminated because they are part of a minority group.

I believe Prop 8 will be found to be unconstitutional.
