R.I.P. Michael Crichton

The brilliant and imaginative storyteller passed away on Tuesday after a “courageous and private battle against cancer,” according to his reps.

The rest of the statement reads:

While the world knew him as a great story teller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us — and entertained us all while doing so — his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes. He did this with a wry sense of humor that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget.

Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand.

He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves behind the greatest gifts of a thirst for knowledge, the desire to understand, and the wisdom to use our minds to better our world.

Michael’s family respectfully asks for privacy during this difficult time.

A private funeral service is expected, but no further details will be released to the public.

Michael, while your one-man battle against environmentalism in the later years of your life admittedly left a bad taste in my mouth, your literary works engaged multiple generations in the escapism and love of reading. You were truly a remarkable storyteller, and I’m sorry we won’t hear more from you.

  • My parents had to sign a note when I was 12 allowing me to read the Michael Crichton books in our school library. I will always have the greatest memories reading his work.

  • Damn, was a great writer and his views on global warming were interesting and never saw anyone disprove them. He was brilliant, beyond being a pop fiction author.

  • RIP Mr. Crichton, you were always one of my favourites. Thank you for getting me so interested in dinosaurs <3

  • Was he saying the Al-gore promoted global warming is false? If so, darn we need more people out there to say this!
    RIP anyway :(

  • This man sure left a legacy and he’ll be sorely missed for sure. If you ever get a chance make sure to check out the Charlie Rose interview from 2007. You’ll find out that he was actually very environmentally conscious than many may expect. However, he felt that there was cause for concern in the way many advocates have professed their beliefs based on theory without having all the facts yet available. (Yes, that would absolutely include Al Gore.)
