Papa Spears to Retain Conservatorship Indefinitely

Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

An LA court ruled today that Britney Spears’ father will retain indefinite control of her personal and financial affairs. The standing agreement was set to expire on December 31 of this year.

It’s a move the singer apparently approves: A court-appointed attorney said the details had been explained to the 26-year-old and she agreed not to oppose it.

Spears could petition later to have the conservatorship removed, but the court’s order otherwise constitutes a lifetime arrangement, a court information officer said. Attorneys for Jamie Spears declined to comment after the hearing.

Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz said she was granting the permanent conservatorship in part because Britney Spears has shown she is “susceptible to undue influence.”

Based on the attorneys’ recommendations and other evaluations of the singer, Goetz said making conservatorship permanent was “necessary and appropriate.”

The move came after a lengthy closed-chambers meeting, and follows a recent medical evaluation of the singer.

Let me translate: Britney Spears is crazy and everybody seems to recognize that. She’s basically going to be treated legally as a child for the rest of her life.

It’s sad, but it’s better than the way things were before.

  • calling her crazy is a bit unfair, yeah? she’s got [most of] her shit together and made improvements; what have you done to change your situation lately?
i think you should be a bit more supportive to someone who clearly needs more understanding than criticism.. i’m just sayin’…

  • Geh. I dunno, I mean – “for the rest of her life?” That’s – I mean, THAT is crazy, not her. That’s bizarre. She can change her mind about this in the future, though, right? Obviously, right? I don’t like it. I can see this arrangement being cool for her for, say, the next 12 months or so, while she continues to mentally stabilise and regain her financial and career stability, but she’s her own woman! The rest of her LIFE?? That’s – kinda bothering me. They’ve got her on too many fucking psych meds. She was never THAt crazy, jesus. I don’t like it.

  • She’s mentally ill, and not terribly bright, but as long as she stays on her meds and is supervised she is OK. The court is probably recognizing that these kinds of conditions tend to be progressive. Look at her face, in her eyes. She looks childlike and very innocent. She needs structure and protection. This arrangement really is in her best interests. And Beet is one of Brtiney Spear’s biggest fans, Lindsay.

  • *Snow pipes up* Me, too! I’m one of her biggest fans, too! I’ve ALways adored Britney, through all the head-shaving nuttiness, before that, during, now, all of it. I just don’t think she’s as “crazy” as everone paints her out to be, nor as unintelligent – I believe she’s way, way smarter than she lets on.

  • I don’t really know much about Britney, Snow. Maybe she is way brighter than she seems. But genuine mental illness doesn’t care how bright you are, it is an equal opportunity illness. Me, I see an innocence that is touching and kind of amazing giving the nature of the life she has led, and I am glad that she is being given some protection, rather than exploitation.

  • If I was Britney and had gazillions of dollars, I’d feel pretty uncomfortable about my dad having power of attorney.

Actually, I’d feel uncomfortable with it anyway, even at my measly $18K a year.

  • The thing is, however stupid or intelligent she is, and however crazy or not, she’s shown that she can’t take care of her own affairs and look after her boys. Plenty of people let those more capable than themselves help out with running their lives; just most people don’t do it in the public eye.

If a young woman who appears to be suffering from bipolar disorder or something similar, and who regularly abuses drugs and alcohol, has a family who are ready and willing to help – and whose help seems to be effective – I think that’s all to the good.

  • tiger: is that a valid justification? =S

a fan or not, it’s about compassion toward another human being; particularly when we only know as much as the media tells us.. [read: we do not know everything]

[for the record i’m a huge britney fan. what is that supposed to represent in terms of the comment beet made and the one i left?]

  • I just want to say…
As some one who is on psych meds, and have been diagnosed with bi-polar & manic depression, among a few other things this is a GOOD thing for her.
I’ll have good days, and bad days, then I’ll think I don’t need my medication, and stop taking it, which puts me right back to square one, all crazazay like.
Luckily enough I have people who will smack me in the back of the head and tell me to smarten up and take my meds, and follow my routine.

It is like being a small child sometimes, you get in a certain frame of mind, and you just can’t seem to drag yourself out of bed in the morning, let alone take care of yourself.

  • @purplemonkeypaws: here’s to your continued good health and great friends! sometimes we all need to be slapped upside the head. the blow is best delivered by someone who actually cares.

  • Yes, she can contest the conservatorship and if she can convince the judge that she is capable of managing her own affairs and her life the conservatorship can be discontinued. It is never a permanent situation. Even mental patients have rights. She might want to enlist the help of a Patient’s Rights Advocate who could help her do this when she feels she is ready.

  • what ever keeps brit brit from coming dangerously close to the way she was before her daddy stepped in, is a good thing
