TMZ is reporting that the double homicide of Jennifer Hudson’s mother and brother could have been motivated by a dispute over a car. I don’t know that there are many good reasons to commit murder but this would be especially senseless. I’ll post updates on this story as they become available.
UPDATE 7:43 ET- Jennifer Hudson’s sister Julia pled for the safe return of her son at Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago. “All I ask, I don’t care who you are, just let my baby go. Please. I just want my son.” The little boy’s stepfather, William Balfour, has not told police where the child may be.
I hope this ends soon for the family.
I hope the little boy, and missing mother are found safe.
This is such a sad story.
This is going to end so badly. The child and her sister are both missing, and there a zillions of corn fields outside of Chicago, and the weather could hide them until next spring. Really one of the sadder, senseless crimes – over a car he stole and sold. Why was this man in their lives? He’s insanely violent, why would you invite that into your home?
What I get from this story is another reminder of how easy it is to kill people with guns. I know, some say “people kill people, not guns,” but if the perpetrator had only had a knife, maybe the second victim would’ve had time to run and maybe the first victim would’ve only been wounded.
If he only had a knife he would have adapted his crime to his weapon for maximum desired effect.
I was so shocked and saddened by this news. I hope that something good comes out of this terrible situation. I pray for the safe return of Julian. My love goes out to the Hudson family.

Possibly. But I still say it’s easy to kill people with guns. You don’t need strength or skill to hold a gun to someone’s head and pull the trigger.

There is no skill or strength involved in using a knife when your body is raging on the same adrenalin which pulls the trigger of a gun.
You do need to get close in either case, gun or knife, to make a fatal wound. So you need as much skill. hmrph…

So you’re saying you can’t kill someone with a gun unless you get close to them? Seems to me you can be farther away when using a gun.
I also think there’d be fewer deaths caused by gunshot wounds and more by knife wounds if it were just as easy to kill with a knife. Damn, do I have to back that up with statistics now? You probably don’t care. I just made you mad when I dared to say something negative about guns.

@versacee: If I followed this story correctly, the ex-convict was married to Hudson’s sister (the boy’s stepfather). So he was there because he was family.

Btw, does anyone else find it odd that she just got engaged and now this happens? If this were a tv show, her fiance would be taking out her relatives so he could get all her money.

I’m not mad. People have this idea, reinforced by movies, that it’s easy to operate a gun when in fact it’s just as hard as a knife. Unless you are a sharp shooter who has been trained to shot to kill from a distance, the probability of you being able to shoot and make contact with your target, especially a fatal area–is about 15 percent. There’s the force of the gun that can throw off the hit. Poor aim. Victim moving. You have to be close for the desired effect. It’s one of the reasons why gun use may out number knife use but so do the chances of you being the victim of a violent crime at the hands of someone you know rather than a stranger…the proximity. More likely to be invading your space on a daily basis. Or, you have to have great aim. Many of the gun shot wounds are not to the people in dispute but to the by-standards. See– bad aim problem.
You would be just as effective wielding a knife since in person the victim freezes with the threat of gun or knife.
You could even say easier to use in drive-bys, but with the introduction of another factor, a car, the possibility of a kidnapping would make the knife just as effective.
I think–it’s not that it’s easier to use–but less messy. Less traceable in that sense. So it’s more popular. It’s also the easy access to guns through the black market.
I don’t think guns are good thing in general. There’s the trigger happy law enforcement–that make you think twice sometimes..
Yes, I think that’s the most tragic part–the engagement. I can’t imagine being so happy about life and then have everything just collapse. Good night.
I certainly hold Jennifer and her family in my prayers, I think she is such a beautiful person, and as I watched her on Oprah and watched Simon crowel eat $$$$, it made my heart jump with joy for her, She is truly a hurting person and going thru a terrible time, and she really needs a lot of support and prayers.
