Today's Evil Beet Gossip

I Was Robbed

French author Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio has been awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.

This is total bullshit. I have no idea who this guy is. I can’t even find his blog.

  • Nobels are not necessarily celebrities,
nor a guarantee of happy reading.
I am pretty sure you never heard of José Saramago
he ‘s a portuguese writer and already won the Nobel prize,
and I really dislike his books anyway.
There’s a lot of business and influence
    floating around such awards nowadays.

  • Oh Grace, I gave it a quick read,
    such european pseudo intellectual crap!
I really am disturbed by this one sided view on Americans,
    it’s quite oldfashioned and disgusting.

  • What I found sad was the equation of the lowest common denominator American attitude with those at the forefront of American literature. Surely if anything breaks down such attitudes, it’s recognising the contribution of American intellectuals to the worldwide community?

I recognise that much of American literature is inward looking – as is much of other countries’ literature! But the best American voices speak to global humanity.

But the Nobel Prize has always courted controversy, I think in a misguided attempt to keep themselves “relevant” and unpredictable. If you ask me, it denigrates the value of the award.

  • He is a wonderful writer, read any of his books.
Grace your comment is so rude! If you are french like me, well I am so ashamed!!

  • Yes I concur with the above aforementioned…

…and might I add that the Nobel prize has historically overlooked such timeless American classics as “Horton Hears a Who” and “Everyone Poops”. Until these oversights are corrected we as Americans will stand as one united front!

  • as an European, I share the same view on the attitude
    of the gentleman
and the credibility of the Institution,
and it’s not a matter that hasn’t already been discussed,
by scholars and experts in different areas.

  • Everyone Poops?
    LOL
    I’d vote for that!
I suggest someone sends a copy onto the Norwegian gentleman.
    Nice title!

  • Erika, have you misunderstood me? I do not agree with Horace Engdahl’s comments. My first post was sarcastic, as I would have thought my second post made clear.

Unless you think I was being rude about the Nobel Prize Committee?

Oh Grace, I gave it a quick read,
    such european pseudo intellectual crap!

You gave it a “quick read” (how quick? 15 seconds?) and that was enough for you to reach the verdict that the 2008 Nobel prize for literature is a load of pseudo intellectual crap. Sweet Jaysus. What a mind you must have, woman! I envy you.

  • no verdict here Horse Marine,
    just an opinion,
and yes, I am a quick reader
    and quick decision maker too,
it’s probably related to brain surgery training
    :)

  • yes I was, Grace and Horse Marine,
although I correct the gentleman is a Swede,
and the thing I regret the most is that people are judged
many a time, for their nationality
in this case for being American,
when it’s well known that Americans excel in many areas
of intellectual merit, and not “only” of scientific quality.
But then it’s just my opinion on the subject,
and I’m not better than anyone else.
    :)

  • I feel like the joke went way over everyone’s head on this one. Or maybe I just think differently (ie not as smart apparently). Either way, literature aside, this post made me laugh. Go Beet.

  • Yea… seriously… I’m sure nowhere in that book did he mention Lohan’s breast or Paris’ big feet.. and they had the NERVE to give him a Nobel Prize!?!?!?!?! This is what is wrong with the world today!
