This is the talent portion of the Miss Alaska competition in 1984.

  • Yes, I noticed the same thing. I found the cross-eyed thing to be very distracting…along with the Harriet Nelson / June Cleaver fashion statement, that is. Are you sure that’s from 1984 and not 1964? If the Obama campaign gets a hold of this video, I think it’s gonna be over for McCain/Palin!

  • does anybody in a beauty pageant ever have a talent that’s not totally dorky? i mean, i play the violin, so i’m not one to judge, but like… idk.
also, i friggin hate when people pronounce it “flaowtist”.
also when people say “pee-anist” instead of “piyanist”.
    it’s like, tomayto/tomahto…
only WHO THE FUCK IN THEIR RIGHT MIND SAYS FUCKING TOMAHTO?

  • Who doesn’t know how to properly tune their instrument that they’ve supposedly been playing for 10 years to their accompaniment for a state competition?!

  • Awesome….. I think Palin Great! Make sure to watch the debates Thursday night she’s gonna suprise a few in the liberal media! ROCK ON McCain/Palin!!

  • > Thursday night she’s gonna suprise a few in the liberal media!

Yes, she will shock people how stupid she is even with weeks of cramming.

Liberal media? LMAO. No such thing you Conservative moron.

  • uh, dear torie, it IS pronounced “flaowtist”. to pronounce it “flute-ist” is like saying “nuke-u-ler” instead of “new-clear”.

also, as a practicing flute player myself, i have to say that she definitely isn’t “accomplished” for someone who’s played for ten years.

  • Ten years studying an instrument and that was the best she could come up with. I would think she would have chosen some classical piece written specifically for the flute to impress the judges with her talent. I’m looking forward to tomorrow to see what her new coaches can help her produce in a much shorter time span. Should be interesting….

  • Beet, the correct spelling is “Flautist”. :)

Also, as a response to an anonymous poster at 5:54pm…
The term “Flautist” is associated with negative connotations derived from the Latin verb Flaut, which means to mock. According to the Oxford dictionary, the term flautist did not appear until 1860 when it was used in “The Marble Faun” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It is believed that the frequent use of the term Flautist comes from the Italian musical terminology “flauto”, which pervades musical scores.
Oxford also states that “Flutist” is a much older, more established term, dating back to 1603.
So technically, “flutist” is the correct term, and flautist was a mere misunderstanding.

As for Palin’s playing… it is very sad that *that* is the best talent she could display. Her playing was atrocious, especially for having played for 10 years. I have studied flute for 14 years and I am a student in music education. Her tone quality is that of a 4th grade student, her low register is horrendous (you cannot even HEAR it), and there is absolutely no depth to her playing. A 4th grader could have done a better job. Horrible, horrible performance by Palin, and I am not at all surprised.

Sorry to go on a rant here.. I just have a lot of knowledge and experience in this particular area and needed to correct those who were obviously ill informed, as well as put in my two cents about Palin’s performance. /rant.

    :-)

  • wow, the intonation was terrible, she looked dumb, her fingers were sloppy, her sound was weak, and I cannot believe it took her ten years to still play like crap!

  • Haha, first thing I like about Sarah Palin.. Not exactly impressive for someone who’s been playing for 10 years, but it’s better than when she talks, yeh?

  • torie… those of us in England pronounce it tomahto… and that’s the correct way of pronouncing it over here, rather than us being out of our right mind, thanks.

  • re; jessi

right on! i too was disappointed in her pitch, volume and timbre. as you and i know, transverse and end-blown flutes also take more air to play, which requires deeper breathing and makes circular breathing a considerably trickier proposition. it’s obvious to a trained musician that sarah palin is just plain dreadful and of course, that beet doesn’t have the refined tastes that we have and can’t even spell flautist! so, umm, while we’re on topic….. how about wrapping your lips around my wiener and letting me hear your low register while i examine your fingering? just askin.

  • there she is, the first female president of the united states.

    congratulations to all of us……
(you just know that Mc Cain would kick the bucked in his four years)

she is almost as bad as Bush!

  • Gosh, I’m sooooo impressed! Performing for ten years by the time this clip was made. If you guess that it took at least 5 years of practice before she actually was deemed good enough to perform, then she’d have stated when she was 5! Moose hunting with dad, running 10K races with the family and clearly devoting hours per day becoming a flautist, no wonder she never had time to read a magazine or newspaper that she could remember the name of!

  • Just another one of her talents that makes her a suitable candidate for Vice President of the largest country of the free world. Where’s Lee Harvey O when you need him.

  • Just like all liberals… You can’t even be civil on your best days. It must be really miserable being you. Waking up every morning worrying about what you’re going to bitch and whine about today…Who you’re going to tear down and rip apart verbally. You’re such a pleasant bunch! There might be a handful of liberals that are good enough to be in the same room as Sarah Palin. She’s a person of very good character who cares about her country and ending all the corruption and actually puts it into action instead of just sitting around whining about what someone else hasn’t done for her. She actually does it! Liberals like you are all just talk… Maybe you’re the one that is really just a ‘blow hard’.
