Emmy Releases Top 10 Lists

For reasons I can’t begin to imagine — well, I guess it’s just to generate buzz — the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has released the Top 10 contenders for Best Comedy and Best Drama, even though the actual five nominees won’t be released until later.

I assume this is just a way to boost ratings for the Emmy telecast — to get people talking about it sooner rather than later — but I just think it’s just kind of mean to be like “You were this close” to everyone who doesn’t make the final cut.

Anyway, here are the semi-nominees:

TOP 10 COMEDY SERIES FINALISTS
“Curb Your Enthusiasm”
“Entourage”
“Family Guy”
“Flight of the Conchords”
“The Office”
“Pushing Daisies”
“30 Rock”
“Two and a Half Men”
“Ugly Betty”
“Weeds”

TOP 10 DRAMA SERIES FINALISTS
“Boston Legal”
“Damages”
“Dexter”
“Friday Night Lights”
“Grey’s Anatomy”
“House”
“Lost”
“Mad Men”
“The Tudors”
“The Wire”

Noticeable snubs include “Desperate Housewives,” “My Name Is Earl,” “Scrubs” and “Heroes.”

  • Here’s my humble take on these:

    TOP 10 COMEDY SERIES FINALISTS
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” — Season 6, compared to the previous seasons, was kind of weak and he tried too hard on some skits. Had a few funny moments, but overall it was not an outstanding year.
“Entourage” — Not my cup o’ tea….never seen an episode.
“Family Guy” — Sorry, but kind of like CYE….seen better days. The references to vintage TV actors and shows is getting kind o’ tired.
“Flight of the Conchords” — Can’t stand the looks and sound of the guy with the glasses…something annoying about him.
“The Office” — Another one I gotta start watchin’ — seems pretty funny.
“Pushing Daisies” — Didn’t this get cancelled?
“30 Rock” — I’ve heard it’s well written, but Alec Baldwin is such a dick I don’t really want to give him any type of support.
“Two and a Half Men” — Stupid, predictable. Kid’s annoying, not funny.
“Ugly Betty” — While this can be amusing, it always get sloppy sentimental. Those dialogs between her and her dad make me wanna hurl.
“Weeds” — Never seen it. Looks interesting, though. Lead actress, Mary Kay Place, or whatever her name is is very cute — that alone might be the reason to start watching it..

    TOP 10 DRAMA SERIES FINALISTS
“Boston Legal” — Any more Shatner is too much Shatner; however, Spader rocks.
“Damages” — Never watched it, but Glenn Close is usually pretty powerful on either the small or big screen.
“Dexter” — Kicks ass; love this show, never missed an episode. 2nd season was better than the first.
“Friday Night Lights” — What can I say…it’s now only available on DIRECTV’S 101.
“Grey’s Anatomy” — Sick of hearing about this show. Best part of this show is that MAD TV did a great spoof on it.
“House” — Rocks. Hugh Laurie keeps me rollin’ on the floor. Getting predictable, but still funny.
“Lost” — Another kick-ass show. Story makes hardly any sense, cryptic as hell; but I’ll be damned if I ever miss an episode. Great show.
“Mad Men” — No more retro-era shows, please.
“The Tudors” — I said no more retro-era shows, please. And for chrissake, King H. da 8 was a fat f***…even when he was young. At least make him somewhat chubby. Like Oliver Platt, maybe.
“The Wire” — Never saw this, but have heard only good about it….gotta hook up with it on NetFlix, maybe.

  • Señor Loco is a Lost watcher.

I just disregarded all of your seemingly accurate opinions.

i really.. really hope flight gets in top five!!

  • Unlike Senor Loco, I won’t pass judgments on shows I don’t watch (which is most of them) but 30 Rock rules and it’s party because of how awesome Alec Baldwin is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is Family Guy there? Weren’t The Simpsons’ creators pissed because The Simpsons couldn’t be considered for Best Comedy as it was animated? I’m confused.

  • THE OFFICE!!! Absolutely wonderful. I can barely stand Flight of the Conchords for more than 5 minutes, not my cup of tea. I´m wondering why Rock of Love 2 didn´t make the top 10 dramas cut…absurd.

  • I like Flight of the Conchords in small doses. Seeing an episode every now and then is good but I watched a few back to back (On Demand) and it got tiresome. Hard to take two guys I know I could kick the shit out of at the same time (and I’m a girl).

  • He is a great player. I just heard that he was dating a girl on ..B l a c k c e n t u r y.c om it is a free inter-racial dating club. Lots of singles there.

  • Pushing Daisies didn’t get canceled… that stupid ass strike stopped production. I’m not entirely sure when it’s supposed to come back (it better, damn it!! That’s about the only show on television I really like)…

  • Senor Loco, you haven’t watched any of the best comedies.

Pushing Daisies blew me away with its first episode. It deserves to win something for the high level of production and innovation.

House is “getting” predicatable? Hahaha. It’s always been, but I love Hugh Laurie enough that I watch it anyway. On DVD.

  • seriously… where the eff is Scrubs on that list? Scrubs is the funniest damn show out there, period. Along with the Office. And Friends, but thats been gone for a while :-(

  • OK, none of these shows even comes close to touching The Wire. It is kind of embarrassing for some of these shows to even be on the same list. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ll get addicted within the first few episodes. It’s the smartest, most realistic, brilliant social commentary you can possibly imagine. It’s like watching a great novel. I’m such a Wire evangelist.

  • Pushing Dasies, Mad Men, 30 Rock And LOST Will Make It In The Top 5.
They Have All Been Superb This Season. I’m Really Upset That Desperate Housewives Didn’t Get In… House Is Good, Grey’s Anatomy Might Make It Because Its Populair, But To Be Honest Season 4 Was Really Bad And It’s Not The Type That Wins Emmys. I Don’t Watch Boston Legal, But People Seem To Hate It. Anyway, I Think From The Best Drama Catogory LOST Or Mad Men Will Win, Comedy There’s No Arguing With 30 Rock, Alec And Tina Are Fantastic!

  • I don’t understand the hate for Boston Legal?! I think it is one of the BEST shows ever. The writing is always amazing and Spader and Shatner are classic together – espedcially there visits over drinks at the end of each show. My other favs are Damage and I LOVE Mad men and Dexter.
