My Sloppy Joe Recipe

I seriously have not heard this much interest in Sloppy Joes since the fourth grade. I actually got text messages from friends this morning asking for my Sloppy Joe recipe. So here’s the recipe that I found online:

* 1 pound ground beef or cube steaks, chopped
* 1 medium onion
* 1 1/2 tablespoon Flour
* 2/3 cup ketchup
* 3/4 cup Coca-Cola or Pepsi or RC Cola
* 2 tablespoon vinegar
* 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
* 1 teaspoon honey
* 1 teaspoon dry mustard
* salt & pepper to taste

Basically you brown the beef (and the onion, if you’re using it) first, and then you throw in the rest of the mix and stir. You’re supposed to let it simmer for half an hour, but I only left it there for 10 minutes and it was just fine.

Now, I have a total sweet tooth, and I also didn’t feel like going grocery shopping, so I left out the onion, the Worcestershire sauce, and the dry mustard. You’ll probably want to include that stuff if you don’t want it really sweet. But they were DELICIOUS!!!

  • i don’t eat meat(just don’t like it, its not bc of ethics or anything) so the idea of eating sloppy joes is TERRIFYING

    however you are so awesome, i just thought you should know that lol. i wanted to comment on your original s.j. post but there were already like a bazillion comments and i wanted to make sure you’d read mine :D

  • My sloppy joe recipe:

    Brown one pound of ground beef, add Manwich and heat, spread on bun.

    Much simpler, lol.

  • Thanks for the recipe! Want to try the best (cinnamon) pancakes?
    You are suppose to mix the wet ingredients and the dry ingredients in separate bowls but I never do.

    INGREDIENTS
    * 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (may need a little more)
    * 3 tablespoons white sugar
    * 1/2 teaspoon salt
    * 4 teaspoons baking powder
    * 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
    * 2 eggs, beaten
    * 1 cup milk
    * 2 tablespoons corn syrup
    * 1/4 cup butter, melted
    * 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

    * 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
    * 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    * Enough milk to make a drizzle

    DIRECTIONS

    1. Icing: Combine confectioners’ sugar, vanilla extract and enough milk to make a liquid frosting.
    2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and cinnamon.
    3. In a separate large bowl, beat together eggs, milk, corn syrup, butter and vanilla extract. Stir in the flour mixture. The batter is thin but add a little flour if batter is very runny.
    4. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium low heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and drizzle frosting on hot pancakes before serving.

  • Dude, I loooove sloppy joes! And I’ve hardly had any since graduating from elementary school. I’m totally going to fiddle with your recipe next week and post my results on my (modest) cooking blog.

  • Hahaha-
    I just got Cloverfield from Netflix.
    Just saw your earlier post… I’ll be sure to enjoy the sloppys and will fill you in on the movie.

  • Beet found the recipe online? She used google and posted a recipe here?

    Wow! Can you please post the weather forecast from where you live also Beet? My day would be complete then.

    As much as we love her personality, her damned corporate owners are making the site boring.

  • to loveitloveit, i also don’t eat meat, but i want to try this using veggie crumbles! those are good and are pretty much the same consistency/taste as ground beef. thanks, beet.

  • @mary:

    If you can track down a photo of a celebrity eating a Sloppy Joe, I will happily replace the picture. Good luck!

  • Dude, this is the comment section, I can make a comment about the quality of the gossip, er recipes on the site.

  • hi, i discovered your website a week ago and let me tell you I much prefer it to PH’s! It’s more girly type gossip, you have a real sense of humour, and now this recipe!!! I’m totally trying that! I’m really looking forward another! This is what would make a real difference between you and other gossip sites! Anyway no matter what I’ll come back, gotta tell you how my sloppy joes turned out : D

  • WTF is wrong with US people putting COKE into their food? seriously!!
    if I may suggest this yummy recipe instead:
    fry an onion and 400g of minced meat, eat about 3 tomatoes and tomato concentrate, season with salt, pepper, little bit of chili powder and lots of fresh parsley. then you mix everything with riffled cheese according to your taste, fill the paste into half-cut capsicums and put them into the oven for about 20 min.

  • hey thanx or the tip Beet and the troops…..
    we don`t really have anything like that down our way (other than rancid old meat pies) but now I`m certainly about to change that :)

  • damn it, beet… i’m sad that so many people have discovered you. i may have to move on. i liked it when less than 5 or 10 people commented on your posts. it was like a close-knit little family. now we’re living in a rabbit hole!
    oh well….
    just a side note, if you’re still trying to lose weight and be healthy and stay away from mad-cow and stuff: substitute the ground beef with ground turkey.
    i used to just get grossed out at the thought of ground turkey, until one of my students made turkey-pesto burgers for us. OMG. they were sooooo delicious, now I NEVER use ground beef anymore at all. meatloaf, tacos, sloppy joes, burgers all with ground turkey. please promise me you’ll try it.
    you know the red cross won’t even take my blood anymore because i lived in europe during the mad-cow years….so yeah…..let’s hope that nothing like mad-turkey shows up.
