“I can buy porn or kill someone in war, but I can’t have a glass of wine. If I could change one thing about America, it would be its ridiculous age limits on things. That’s why I love visiting Britain. I can walk into a bar and order a drink without having to show my passport. That’s so cool.”

Eighteen-year-old Hayden Panettiere.

Hells yeah, Hayden!

I think our Presidential candidates should have a new running platform: a lowering of the drinking age for Hayden Panettiere. Because here in the gossip world, we need that bitch drunk!

  • Jeez I had a lot of respect for her up until now.

What an unintelligent thing to say. Buying porn and serving in the military have nothing to do with drinking alcohol.

  • Veronica, funny comment.

mollay, you must be a Christian conservative right? You are old enough to blow someone’s head off or burn them to death with white phosphorus but they can’t have a beer?

Only a Conservative Christian would be that illogical.

  • I agree with her actually. If 18 year olds are old enough to choose and support a leader of their country, and also to be sent off to hell and fight for a cause they more or may not be supportive of or even quite fully understand they should also have the right to be stoned ass drunk once in a while.

and when you’re 18, aren’t you also up for jury duty? I had to when I was 20.

  • The drinking age is SUPPOSED to be different from state to state. It is supposed to be established and enforced by state governments, rather than on a national level — that’s the way it’s always been. So why, then, does each state independently enforce a 21+ law when none of them has to?

In 1984, a national law was passed (and eventually enacted, in 1987) to ‘compel’ each of the states to set its respective drinking age at 21. If any state should choose to exercise its right to set the drinking age younger than 21, that state is “subjected to a ten percent decrease in its annual federal highway apportionment.” That’s right. The national government financially penalizes any state that dares to drop the current drinking age.

You can read all about it at Wikipedia – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Minimum_Drinking_Age_Act

  • Her comment about buying porn or killing someone in a war were bullshit smokescreen. She intends to do neither. This little pixie just likes playing “grown up” out of the country and getting drunk legally 3 years before she can in the States so she’s making big ol’ important statements to justify her behavior. She doesn’t give a shit as long as she can get toasted. Open your eyes everyone! Anyone who dresses like that isn’t mature enough to drink cocktails anyway. Pass her a juice box and ground her…dumbass.

  • So, daffylass, when should we expect your porno? Do we have to wait until you get back from Iraq, or what?

Why did you expect her to do those things? Simply because she mentioned them? I do believe there are plenty of 18-year-olds that would rather drink that be sent off to war. Does that make their opinion less valid?

And what does her clothes have to do with her credibility anyway? Maybe if she was saying how she didn’t steal the beans from Lima to the rhythmic beats of Rockapella, I would see the reason. (Veronica, nice one!)

  • Leave Hayden alone you uptight judgemental runts(sic)…let me be the first to send a jager shot her way and kudos to her. She has been a wonderful proponent of environmental activism and has not, as of yet, disgraced herself in the public eye.

  • I’m with you, Rob!

Also, I disgrace myself in the public eye every weekend, and experts say MAYBE this WOULDN’T be the case if the drinking age were dropped to 18. Just saying!

  • Thumbs up, Hayden, and no crap from mollay about underage highway deaths related to alcohol. According to stats, last year alcohol only contributed to 28% of fatalities among minors, which means that the majority of accidents were caused by… you guessed it! Sober people.

  • She is right though!
How can someone be old enough to own and use a gun but to young to have a beer?????

I did spend quite some time in germany where you can drink wine and beer when you are 16 and liquor when you are 18, its great.

  • You know what’s really great about America, though? You can be 18 years old and date your 30 year old coworker!

  • I think we should just put beer right into the baby bottles! They do it in the sticks.

  • How many people reading these comments had their first cocktail at 21? Maybe if kids didn’t have to sneak around because they are doing something “wrong” then there wouldn’t be as many tragedies. Once again, the “morals and values” crowd clouds the real issue: TEACH YOUNG PEOPLE RESPONSIBILITY. How is someone who is 18, 19, or 20 getting sloshed and driving any different than a 21 year old? Is there some magical age wherer young people start making “good” decisions? Maybe there is in fantasy land…

  • Yeah the massive youth drugged and Drunk problem in England.. and when some drunken, drugged, dullard gob knifes ya for being in his way or a boozed up hating girl gang splices you fifty ways to heaven for having swell clothes or a brains sloushed axe guy wants to stand where you are but isn’t going to polietly ask.. well, you are all fizzed up and cheerful and unmindful of danger.. even, raping, fighting, vomiting all around you is funny.. don’t [wine] about it. You ever hear; give youth a chance to grow up and form safe opinons about things by observing what doesn’t work and what is bad? Alcohol is bad for anyone’s health.. not good for those still learning, driving, handling major responsiblity. It’s better to wait and see if you are an alcoholic too eh?

  • Can I just return to this thread to ALSO mention how opposed I am to youth driving at ages 15 and 16? That is way too young to be responsible for a killing machine. Driving at 21 and drinking at 18 makes a whole lot more sense to me.

And yes, I waited until I was 21 to drink. And you know what? Drinking at 21 was a mistake, too. Fine.

  • the good thing would be sensible parents who would guide you and help you decide what and when to do
I agree with Hayden in some ways too
I drank my first half bottle of beer when I was 13 because my grandpa let me try it
    no big deal ever since
let’s not make such a big fundamentalistic fuss about it
and the Carmen Sandiego stuff was Beet’s idea, sometime ago, in a post about Sharon Stone.
    THAT was funny!

  • i agree with kittah.

plus, she could always get her creepshow boyfriend to buy her booze–which i’m sure she does. furthermore, didn’t she used to party with paris hilton? she could easily drink in clubs and restaurants like the rest of the underaged hollywood brats.

  • Here is Canada we can drink at 19, and contrary to what someone above mentioned about England and their drinking laws, Canada has a pretty low crime rate! I think at 19 your mature enough to decide whether you want to drink or not. Besides, if you really want to drink, your going to do it regardless of if your the legal age or not (not like its hard to get your hands on booze). 21 is a bit too high, I mean your almost done college/university at that point, and c’mon who are we kidding, most uni kids get wasted! Thats what freshman year is all about!

  • It’s bad enough that the 21 year old college students swarm the local bars and act like fucking retards. I think I’d blow my head off if I had to be around a bunch of drunk teenagers. Bartenders around the country would surely have to find another profession to avoid suicide.

  • She’s right actually.
The point she’s trying to make is, you can kill someone for your country, you can buy porn, your a legal ‘adult’ and yet you can have a glass of wine? People are responsible or irresponsible at all ages.
Once they hit 21 the first thing they will do is hit the bar anyway, it’s a way of rebelling against the system, not because it’s actually so fun to go get wasted. If you’re considered an adult, you should be treated a such, if you don’t used that privilege responsibly then you pay for it eg: license taken away, banned from the bar etc.. that should go for any age Eighteen plus.
Nah, I’m not some young American who wants to go get hammered.
I’m legal drinking age here in Canada, I’m only 20 but I don’t go getting drunk every night, hell I hardly have a few drinks once a month, if that.
People should stop judging on age and actually think a bit.
The world should also stop judging on other things too such as homosexuality, skin colour etc.. but thats the way some people are sadly.

  • Ah mollay so you are just a regular idiot instead of a religious idiot. :P

    > Here is Canada we can drink at 19

18 in Quebec (and they rarely checked ID). The greatest thing about growing up in Ottawa is you drive 5 minutes over the border to Hull, Quebec and you are legal to drink and go to clubs. Once you turned 19 then you could party in Ottawa until 1am then drive over to Quebec and party there until 3am when the bars closed (yes, even back when I was a teenager in the 80’s we used a designated driver).

  • the reason you can go to other countries and kill people at 18 is because 18 yr old guys are impressionable and not mature enough to see the negative aspects of it. i thought this was common knowledge.

  • Oh right I forgot that if someone’s opinions differ from those of another, it makes them an idiot.
    Because THAT makes sense.

  • Your opinion doesn’t make any sense and is why I called you an idiot.

By the way you say you aren’t religious but you didn’t answer if you voted Conservative.

  • didn’t she get busted for a DUI already? and why is she dressed like a secret agent? and why — oh, never mind. i’m bored.

  • I agree w/ Lucian-Veronica gets ‘best comment’. Why doesn’t this chick do something about her brows? I mean -Damn- I recognized her just from her Bert & Ernie brows & her fivehead. ;)

  • i remember when drinking age was 18, but by the time i was legal it turned to 21.
in retrospect 18 is way too young to handle that responsibility, being that most 18 yo’s just want to get drunk and party. this is a stupid comment by hayden, but she’s not mature enough to realize it b/c in her less than legal years she thinks she knows it all already…just like we all did at her age.

  • ‘Thumbs up, Hayden, and no crap from mollay about underage highway deaths related to alcohol. According to stats, last year alcohol only contributed to 28% of fatalities among minors, which means that the majority of accidents were caused by… you guessed it! Sober people.’

Right Chris, because the only dangers of alcohol amongsts minors are drunk driving. Let’s ignore alcohol-induced brain damange and the fact that half of violent crimes among people under the age of 21 are alcohol-related.

And those statistics are flawed. Of course the percentage of fatalities caused by alcohol would be smaller. I’m pretty sure teenagers drive to places other than parties. Unless you think teens spend just as much time on the road driving drunk as they do driving to school, work, etc.

  • Mollay your stats are nice and accurate I think. But what is the gun rate use in violent crimes in US?? I think Hayden just underlines the fact that drinking is way less dangerous than …. OWNING A WEAPON!!!

I mean that is so obvious I don’t even understand how can we still allow such things in US!! Some banks offer guns when you open an account!! You can legally buy a weapon under 18 in some states!!
Does it sound right to you? Not to me!!

  • Good god. It’s not a big deal. Deal with the fucking drinking age in your own way. You can go out and try to get a change, you can drink illegally, or, like you fine people have chosen, to constantly bitch about something that you have not remotely attempted or even thought about changing yourselves. Everything has to be done for you worthless fucks.
