Nobody’s Watching Grey’s Anatomy Anymore

Hey, remember Grey’s Anatomy? That show with the doctors and Patrick Dempsey and that one anorexic chick who looks about 30 years to old to be an intern? I guess it’s still on TV, it’s just that nobody’s watching it.

Grey’s audience was down 23% this year, and it dropped out of the top 10. The season finale last week averaged 14.8 million viewers, an all-time low for the series. Granted, these are still HUGE numbers (for comparison, Gossip Girl only averages 2.2 million viewers) , but they’re nothing compared to where the show used to be.

Why did you guys stop watching Grey’s?

  • It became overly-slutty, the writing turned from clever to cloying, and it’s basically emotionally-manipulative with no intellectual payoff.

    In my opinion, at least.

  • It was getting ridiculous. Still kinda is, although I loved Alex last night toward the end. That guy (Justin Chambers) needs more airtime to show off his talent like last night. Awesome.
I still watch, but I just use my DVR to record it and watch whenever nothing else is on…I used to HAVE to watch it right as it came on!

  • A) I’ve never seen a work environment where everyone has slept with one and, in this case, maybe two, three, or four co-workers. Unrealistic and trashy.
    B) The on again/ off again Meredith/ McDreamy thing has been far too drawn out and people are bored with it.

I only watched the finale this season… and it was only because The Office’s season had already ended and I was bored.

  • i think it happens when the thing about writters starts coz all series don’t have new episodes so we get bored… i’m a huge fan, i have all their dvd’s so i don’t understand why it happen… but i still saw all the episodes here in mexico… xoxo

  • While I still watch it, I just don’t watch it on T.V. anymore. I watch it online because I get busy during the week and um, hello?! Less commercials. But I also agree with Paige’s number 2…the whole McDreamy and Meredith thing is kinda lame at times. It’s so back and forth and McDreamy was starting to look like a dog that was asking to be kicked. C’mon give the man some dignity and Meredith some balls to make a decision. I think they need to add some new meat to spice things ups Maybe a hot doctor who throws everything off or someone who can just make a decision! I do love the show’s tender moments though and the messages that they send everynow and then.

  • I still watched every episode this season; except, after the writer’s strike I missed a few. I just had forgotten about it so much. I did catch them all online, though.

  • It was getting annoying and crappy, though. I think the last couple of episodes picked up.

  • Grey’s totally jumped the shark when Stick Figure and Whiny Boy slept together and then he married Gorgeous Chick. And then cheated on her – with Trailer Trash, who had been sleeping with Stubble, Stubble then started sleeping with Stick Figures’ sister. Nu?

  • Cua it started to suck BIG TIME!!! Used to love it, haven’t watched it at all this season. Meredith was enough for me-YUCK. :(

  • I watched the first season and loved it. Started watching the second season, missed an episode, realized the world didn’t implode as a result. Then I missed the next episode and that’s when all that bullshit started happening behind the scenes between Dempsey and Washington. I found it took away from the show because the background was getting too involved.

And it just got stupid. You could tell it was headed in the same direction that Ally McBeal went. It went from being quirky to being in love with its quirkiness and everything that was supposed to be cute and whimsical just seemed too stupid.

And it was the complete and total narcissim and self-involvedness of the characters. They didn’t have conversations with each other, they just talked at each other. Two people, talking at each other, not caring about the other person, just talking about themselves. It was too much so I quit cold turkey. Just like I did with Desperate Housewives.

  • Oh, and also, what’s with that picture? Cast of 1,000?

And I don’t find McSteamy hot.

  • After all of these notes, I have to say, Ernestine said it best…. the first post. ha!

  • I still watch every week but hated the George,Izzy cheating on his wife thing!!! Alos, it’s not nearly as interesting since Burke and Cristina ended. They added some great chemistry and intense relationship. I can’t stand Private Practice even though I have really, really tried! Just can’t feel anything for any of the characters o this show.

  • I watched but now I am done. The dialog is juvenile (shiny, shiny pager!), the storylines are repetitive and the character of Meredith grates on my nerves. I was kind of hoping a fire would start from her stupid candle house and that would be the end of her. Then I would have watched next season.

  • Totally agree with everyone.

Meredith is just too whiny. It’s like they found people liked it at first, so they played it up and it’s just too much and constant now.

People found out George was gay – kinda hard to find him sexy when you know he’s doing guys. Then they have him sleeping with Meredith and Izzy – yeah right.

The plot lines are getting too much like ER did – way over the top weird stuff every single week (how many times can they quarentine everyone). Shit like that doesn’t constantly happen in the real ER’s. Hello – get some freaking ER doctor’s and nurses to read the scripts and give their input. Kinda like the whole Denny plot. Someone has a heart condition, and then major procedure and they’re aren’t monitoring him, it’s just “oh no, he’s dead now…boohoo” – sorry people, it doesn’t happen.

Katherine Heigel thinks she’s the top shit, wants to get out of her contract so she can pursue movies, and so now she doesn’t act as well as she used to.

I give it two more years like this before they cancel it.

  • My problem with the show is that all of the characters are just too freakin whiny and annoying. I can’t really bring myself to root for any of them (except for maybe George and Bailey). I’m not sure what happened, because I used to *really* care about them all. I mean I was literally s-o-b-b-i-n-g during that season Finale when Denny died and Izzy was on the floor in that gorgeous red dress. Now I sort of wouldn’t care if any of em got hit by a bus on the way to work.

  • I know exactly when I stopped watching- the three episode arc where Meredith died and came back to life. I was like, really? REALLY? Enough, I hate all these people.

  • Yeah, they’re whiny at times but I can’t help but root for Meredith and Derek. How can you not? I still watch religiously, just not on TV anymore. I’m always busy when it airs so I watch online.

  • i started watching greys late in the game..but i saw some catch up session and i got the idea. anyway, even though i never watched from the beginning, i have noticed it’s gotten way stupid. like, very unrealistic. and the witty banter can get annoying b/c it’s so repetitious. kinds the way i used to feel about dawson’s creek banter after a while. i hate when i can tell that the same writer is writing dialogue for all the characters. but i still watch. and i watch gossip girl too. there really isn’t much good stuff on network on tv these days…

  • I continue to watch it, my favorite storyline was Burk and Christina, so it put a huge damper on my enthusiasm when he got kicked to the curb. I really hated the whole Izzy/George story line and I had a hard time watching after Derek and Addison called it quits. For me, it would have been way more intriguing to watch them get back together. So…yeah…and Meredith bugs the shit out of me. I hate the fact that she is so nasty to her “sister” I mostly watch it online, because it is way more convenient and my laptop has an awesome picture.
But, yeah, I will keep watching…until I just can’t take it anymore.

  • The characters stayed ‘characters’ – real only in the minds of writers who got way too into naval gazing. The writers seemed to have fallen in love with their own weirdness and forgot they were supposed to be offering up stories actual real people could connect to.

But I don’t own a tv, only watched in on DVD so maybe I needed the commercials!

  • I haven’t stopped. Still a huge Dr. McDreamy fan.

In fact, the season finale just reinvigorated my excitement for next season! ;-)

  • I watched the first season-then they lost me. I agree with all of the posters as to why Grey’s turned into a steaming pile of crap, but my main reason for not being able to stomach this show anymore can be summed up in three words. Katherine Heigel.

  • I watched the first 2 seasons of Grey’s and really enjoyed them, but it’s jumped the shark about 5 times by this point.

1.) Meredith is just such a self-involved, selfish, whiny person, and it’s hard to like a show with such an unpleasant central character.
2.) The whole Izzy/George subplot served to make Izzy (who was one of my favorites from the first 2 seasons) completely unbearable, and George came off as a total doormat.
3.) Addison, my absolute favorite character, and one of the few voices of reason at Seattle Grace, left.
4.) That 3 episode arc where it looked like they might kill off Meredith and then, defying all logic and medical reality, brought her back to life, SUCKED.
5.) By separating Bailey and her husband, they broke up one of the only stable relationships in the show (possibly the only one, in fact).

It’s not at all surprising that no one watches anymore, and I lay most of the blame on Shonda Rhimes, who thought that her audience was so blindly devoted to the show that she and her writers could do whatever the hell they wanted with their characters and we would just roll with it. The rest of the blame goes to Katherine Heigl who has brought herself a lot of negative publicity which rubs off on the show, the writer’s strike (which was unavoidable, but most shows have seen a drop in their audience on account of it), and the rest of the writing team who have taken these really interesting characters (with the exception of Meredith) and just screwed them up so badly that there’s no reason to keep following their stories.

  • I don’t like docs serials
    maybe because i’m a doc
    I like lawyers serials
    police thrillers
    sci-fi
no docs serials for me, please
except for Dr House and just because of Hugh Laurie and some of his cynical nonsense lines, not the script, totally devoid of scientific sense

  • It was the episode where Izzie decided to take care of the deer in the parking lot. It could have been a believable moment for the always-too-emotional Izzie, but as soon as I saw that awful shot of the deer springing back to life, I knew I was done. Haven’t watched it since.

  • I still watch it, but now I watch it online, since all the episodes are on abc.com. It is much more convenient and there are less commercials.

  • Wow, Julia. Thanks for the rundown! Now I’m DEFINITELY not going to watch the show. You’re a peach! :)

  • I still watch it…. I absolutely hated the first like 7 episodes of this season… But the last like 3 or 4 were great… And the finale was super!

  • now that Burke is gone, the episodes focus on Meredith and a bitter chrstina…….that shit gets boring after about…oh say ONE episode.

WHEN IS MEREDITH GONNA TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR HER HAPPINESS!!!!!

And while Patrick Dempsey and Eric Dane are hot, they are predictable. The stories are lame. George’s storyline are unbelievable because we know he’s gay, I don’t believe any kiss he shares with a woman………ever:) Besides it was hard to begin with because he looks like a child.

The only interesting character is the meany Korev, i will watch to see what happens with him.

Izzy, she’s just floating, until she becomes a major star….she’s annoying.

IT USED TO BE THE BEST!!!!THEY MESSED WITH THE CHEMISTRY!!!!!BRING BACK BURKE AND ADDISON!!!

  • I had a HUGE girl crush on Addison ever since she strutted her shit at the end of the season 1 finale. Although she had her crazy moments, she seemed to be the most well-adjusted out of all of the ‘crazies’. Then she left for Private Practice and they made her character a wack job. She was the most interesting character, IMO.

Season 4 started out really dumb… mainly because Izzie was the cause of it (GEORGE?!?! CHEATING?!?!?! DEERS?!!?!??!?!), but it got better towards the end because ADDISON GUEST STARRED. So I started watching it again, hoping that she would come back. … But to no avail :(

The season finale this year rocked my socks because Meredith finally got her shit together. The only thing I’m a little uncertain of is the Hanh/Callie thing (I <3 lesbians, but this was just so WTF WHERE DID THAT COME FROM!?).

  • They should’ve kept Burke. He was an interesting charecter. George & Izzy should’ve been kicked to the curb!

  • Frustration over the fact that nobody could be happy. The writers killed off a relationship everyone wanted to work and they can never let the two main characters actually be together. They don’t introduce new main plots. Throughout the entire series it’s always been meredith and derek can never be happy together blablabla let’s kill all relationships. It just symbolizes failure in relationships and doesn’t balance it out with any success

  • Well, there’s something good that no one has mentioned here – with the introduction of Meredith’s younger sister, they could totally kill off Meredith and just have the show focus on the younger Grey.

I still like watching the show, but I like seeing bad things happen to people I don’t like.

  • I still watch but the show did lose it when:

    Meredith just wouldn’t die.
    Addison left.
George slept with Izzie (his being gay does not bother me since ….hello people these are actors!! Do you think that Chambers is really a surgeon? ha ha)
    The shiny pager crap.

I hope they get their feces together next season.

  • I still watch… I still have hope. But the Mer/Der storyline gets on my nerves. I need them to just be together already. Merideth isnt as annoying to me as she used to be. Is this just cuz I’m used to her?? Not sure. The George/Izzie thing was a horrible idea. And that Rebecca/Ava/whatever her name is – she is the most annoying character EVER!

  • it just recycled the same tired plots over and over and over. i get it already! mcdreamy this, mc dreamy that, you cant make up your mind. im turning the channel.

  • I can pretty much trace the demise of Grey’s back to Isaiah Washington getting canned, the writers’ strike, them casting that dumb bitch Ava/Rebecca/Jane Doe, and then the continually aggravating Derek/Meredith on again off again b.s.

  • The show typifies the world’s love for sin, constant bickering, manipulating, sexual temptation, etc. IMO the show is evil and you should ween yourself off this junk, as well as all the other hellbound TV shows that are put on the air. Get yourself out of enjoying the pleasure of watching sin and turn the TV off for a little while and enjoy time with your family, bake a dinner, etc. The show really has nothing to do with the medical practice. Pray upon the Lord through Jesus Christ, get yourself saved properly (John 3:3) and be renewed and you will no longer crave this sinful show. DOn’t be hellbound like most of the world!

  • Amen! Preach On! Steve H. My wife is an addict to the show. Can’t stand the wicked plot lines.

  • It used to be comical and you would always be laughing but now its just a huge snor! all we hear about is merideth and McDreamys stupid relationship problems
