Today's Evil Beet Gossip

Homophobia Is Bad, Mmkay?

Here’s Lance Bass’s new PSA, in support of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, which is trying to urge students to stop the bullying, harassment and discrimination occurring in schools, with a day of silence (dayofsilence.org) on April 25.

This year’s event will be held in memory of Lawrence King, a California 8th-grader who was shot and killed February 12 by a classmate because of his sexual orientation and gender expression.

God, how much do you have to hate yourself in order to kill someone just because they’re gay?

  • omggg! last year a girl in my class had this note with her and it was saying how she was being silent for the whole day because of this and stuff but she wasnt lesbian, but alot of her friends were gay/lesbian…weird i though she was making this thing up lol

  • i love this organization and this day.
i participated all through high school. even now, i cant be silent b/c of work but i still talk about the day and wear pro-gay clothing and rainbows.
my senior year i wore a rainbow skirt and a homemade t-shirt explaining the day. i got called “dyke” sooo many times, it hurt but in way it was good b/c it also made a lot of people notice and actually think about the way they treat people and to not be homophobic.
i’m excited you posted about this. =)

  • I actually live in Oxnard, the city where Larry was killed. It was a complete shock to the entire community. This was something totally out of the norm for us and is something that terribly sad. Kids can be so fucked up and sometimes it has to do with their own insecurities. Although it’s been quite sometime since I’ve been in high school and I really cant be silent for one day because I am a realtor and its in our nature to talk our heads off, I will definitely pass this on to my brothers who are still in high school. Thanks, Beet, for posting this!
