Today's Evil Beet Gossip

Abigail Breslin Is Now Fully Licensed to Sell You Cookies

Abigail Breslin Inducted into Girl Scouts of USA, Pictures, Photos

Abigail Breslin was inducted into the Girl Scouts in what appears to be a publicity stunt for her new film, Nim’s Island.

Dude, I’d totally forgotten about Girl Scouts. I was a Girl Scout. I remember the other girls and I, in, like, second grade, would go door-to-door all around the neighborhood selling cookies. Yup, just two or three short-skirted eight-year-olds, naively ringing doorbells, devoid of any adult supervision. Were there fewer child rapists around those days or were our parents just less aware of their existence? Today, girls sit in front of the Best Buy, practically bodyguarded by their mothers, or else the parents just drag the stupid cookie sheets into their work and pressure all their coworkers to buy a bunch.

My mom made me watch videos of when I was a little girl the other day. I’m talking, like, four years old, and I’m climbing up huge trees and jungle gyms and falling down flat on my ass and then getting up and trying again. No one is, you know, putting down the video camera to check to make sure I’m okay after falling ten feet out of a tree. I was horrified! I was like, “Mom! You just let me keep falling like that?” and she was like “Eh, it was a different time. And you turned out okay, didn’t you?”

I don’t know where I’m going with this. I don’t know what Girl Scouts is today, but I imagine it’s nothing like when I was a kid. When I was a little girl, you earned your right to be a Girl Scout. With your blood, sweat and tears, not by starring in some pansy-ass fantasy film. We had Arts and Crafts, beyotch, not Craft Services. Abigail Breslin better get her ass on the street and sell some fucking cookies if she wants to wear that sash with any pride.

Nah, I’m kidding. GSA (I guess it’s not even GSA anymore … they’re the Girls Scouts of the USA now) is a fantastic organization that does a lot of good work toward building confidence and leadership skills in young women. Learn more here.

  • Wow I’ve never used this name before and it was default in my comment box. Strange.

Anywho…Girls Scouts is a pretty kick ass organization!

  • I didn’t even know girl scouts went by GSA. Over here in minnesota, the only GSA i’ve heard of is Gay Straight Alliance. Anyways, she reminds me dakota fanning. probably just because shes a child actress. but, either way, i love both of ’em.

  • My daughter went to this event last night with a couple of the other girls from our troop. It came off mainly as a publicity event for Nim’s Island, but I won’t begrudge Abigail a chance to be to be a Girl Scout. Security was heavy and none of the girls or parents were allowed to take pictures. Only official photos were taken. I guess they figured there’s a hot market for Abigail Breslin pix or she has excessively controlling publicity people. She sat with the girls for the official photos and then watched the movie from the back of the room with her people. She split as the credits started to roll. I guess I’m being a bit harsh, but on the positive side I can say that I really liked Abigail’s acting in Little Miss Sunshine (although I didn’t quite enjoy the movie itself).

Dakota Fanning did the same thing a couple years ago when her movie Dreamer came out. One of our troop’s girls was there, too. Dakota, though, was cool. A real trouper. She took a ton of personal photos, signed autographs, sat with the girls during the movie, and in the weeks after the event sold cookies out in front of the council office. I confess to being a Fanning fan since then. I guess that means I can be bought for the price of an autograph and a sincere smile.

Rita, I use GSA as shorthand, but everyone always says The Girl Scouts. You can hear the capital letters when they’re spoken. It’s fine to say The Girl Scouts because in other countries they’re Girl Guides.

To the evil beet who I will now refer to as EB I’ll echo your tongue in cheek sentiments about the good old days of Girl Scouts. In fact I’ll share a link from the Wall Street Journal about the changes happening now (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120641101055361411.html?mod=hps_us_inside_today). It makes me grind my teeth in frustration and my wife and I have tried to preserve GSA traditions, but national seems to think changing with the times trumps tradition.

Thanks for the post, EB, my wife found it while looking around for mention of last night’s screening. I just wanted to echo some of your observations.

  • I was at the faux “Investiture”/Publicity Stunt last night with my girls from my troop. My daughter also sat next to Dakota Fanning when she was inducted and screened “Dreamer” a couple of years ago at a public movie theater. These two events were like night and day. Dakota showed up in FULL uniform, graciously signing autographs and taking pics with the Girl Scouts. My daughter just happened to be at the right place when she was chosen to sit next to her during the movie. She even shared popcorn and went to the restroom with Dakota. (Get your mind out of the gutter…lol) She was very professional, considerate, caring and was a sister to every Girl Scout, just like the law says. The screening for Nim’s Island was at Fox Studios and like going to the airport. Rent-a-cops were searching little girl’s purses, and wanding them, cameras were prohibited, Abigail showed up with just a cadette sash and nothing else Girl Scout related, she took photos with the girls for the paparazzi and went to the back of the room during the movie and split when the credits rolled. The girls were disappointed that they couldn’t meet her. Dakota stayed and signed posters until EVERY Girl Scout who attended (about 300) had one. She even stopped and took pics. Her mom was great as well. At least craft services gave the girls awesome cookies and brownies with milk after the screening.

I have nothing against Abigail, she was gracious and thanked the Girl Scouts for letting her be a part of the organization. I’m not sure she’ll ever get the rest of the stuff for her sash, or ever sell cookies. She’s a good actress and I enjoyed her movie last night, but I agree with EB about the blood, sweat and tears to be a Girl Scout. I was a dedicated Girl Scout and now my daughter is and we only want dedicated Girls to be represented, actors or not.

So Hollywood needs to let the next young “IT” girl know that being a Girl Scout takes more than just getting your picture taken getting a pin and saying the promise. Let’s see how Abigail will represent.

BTW, I found this blog by looking for pics of my kid at the screening and had to forward it to other Girl Scout Leaders.

    Girl Scouts ROCK!!

  • Wow, I swear I was totally munching on some Old-Fashioned Shortbread Cookies as I read this. And yes juicy, the coconut samoas are delicious. Girl Scout (cookies) Rule!!

  • I remember the days of being an unsupervised Girl Scout. Nowdays I work at a Girl Scout Camp and the moms won’t allow the girls to use scissors on their own.

  • I get to pimp cookies at work for my daughter every year.
This is the last year. Her troop leader is ghastly – they have yet to earn any badges this year, they go nowhere, they sit and color pictures and that’s about it. I am extremely disappointed.

  • *holding up three fingers and reciting the moto* “on my honor, I will try, to serve God, and my country, to help people at all time, and to live by the girlscout law”…why do i still remember that!?

  • whats with the three fingers. Usually When i put up 3 fingers, I do it to a person i don’t like and say, “READ BETWEEN THE LINES BIOTCH!!
