The 4-year-old daughter of rapper Juvenile, Jelani Deleston, was shot to death by her 17-year-old brother, who is not Juvenile’s son, on Thursday in Georgia. Also brutally murdered were her 39-year-old mother and her 11-year-old sister.
You know, normally I try to keep politics and, you know, “real” issues as far away from this blog as possible, mostly because I’m terribly ill-informed about issues involving anything and anyone who might not warrant an invite to the Teen Choice Awards, and also because I don’t really care, but, look: my gut instinct about guns has always been, like, hey, it says in our Constitution that we can have guns, so, like, I think it’s only fair that we have guns. But then I read about something like this and I’m like, “Really? Why the fuck did this kid have a gun?” and then I’m like, “Oh, yeah, ‘cuz the Constitution says we can have guns all willy-nilly over the place.” And then I’m like, “You know, maybe I should see exactly what the Constitution says.”
The Constitution says this, in the Second Amendment:
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
And I read that and I’m like, “You know, maybe in the modern world, this should just mean that the military can have guns, and not every dumbass in Georgia,” and then I devote like an hour of my life to reading the entire Wiki on the thing and it turns out that lots of other people — including assorted state and federal courts — think the same thing, and then — and this is the really bad part — I realize that I’m totally fascinated by all these legal discussions and decide that what I ought to do is go to law school so that in like 30 years I can write about what I think of all this in the Harvard Law Review and that’s how I know it’s time to go to bed.
But anyway.
If you’ve just been dying to talk about gun control laws on this blog, here’s your chance, buddy.

Um, if you read the entire story you would know that the mom is a cop. I’m no Columbo, but that’s probably where the gun came from.

No one was trying to be funny and the word “awesome” that led off the post wasn’t meant to say, “yay, they’re dead.” It’s the way you say “awesome” when you can’t believe how fucked society is getting and you have to watch this ridiculous shit on the news and realize nothing is getting better.
Everyday there’s another story in the news about a family member losing his shit and killing the entire family. I’m Canadian and it happens up here too. A couple of years ago, a 12 year old girl and her 20 something year old boyfriend killed her family. Then add the school shootings on top of that. Yeah, there’s a problem. Now I’m not saying guns are the root of all evil and wide-sweeping gun reform (in both countries) is the answer but it would sure be hard to take out a room full of people with a hunting knife.
And for some of the posters, there are different types of humour. I suggest some of you (not all) read up on a little thing called “satire.” It’s funny too but in a less obvious funny way.
Zoesmama, I believe that cops aren’t supposed to just leave their guns lying around where anyone could get them.

I know that I am going to probably going to take a lot of heat for this but I honest to God believe that some of this comes from kids playing violent video games. It has been proven that teens and preteens brains process information differently. They don’t think of, or realize the very real consequences to their actions. I don’t think they realize the finality of their actions. People have had handguns and hunting rifles in their homes for generations. Now all of a sudden kids are showing up at schools, places of employment etc and shooting everyone in sight. Why is this becoming a new phenomenon? I mean really, think about it. I don’t think it is just bullying-bullying has been around forever, parents and kids have butted heads forever. Kids seem to think this extreme violence is the way to handle situations. Why?

One of the flaws with this logic is that, just because the laws say that only the military can have guns, do you think criminals are going to say “Oh well I guess it’s the law now…I’ll go ahead and surrender my weapon.” Come on now. They’ll still have their guns, yet law-abiding citizens will have no way (short of their fists) to protect their homes and families.
What is really needed here is people control. Parents need to lock up their guns and educate their children. My father was a police officer and we always had guns in the house. They were locked up, and I knew to NEVER touch one. Not even as a joke.
And in the long run, if someone really wants to kill someone else, he/she will do it no matter what. If we outlaw guns, they’ll use knives. If we outlaw knives, they’ll use their own hands.
And there’s my rant.

The shooter was her 17 year old son. He did this on purpose, and I’m pretty sure he could have gotten a gun from a number of places, not just at home. That’s one difference between America and other places. It’s sad.

I like mambas response. You can take it as the literal meaning, but in this society awesome denotes a happy or excited feeling. That is what everyone is getting pissed about. I personally enjoyed how this started with that word. We are so desensitized as a society(just watch the daily news) that seeing or hearing about this poor little girl getting shot is not shocking. You can feel bad for the girl and her family, but don’t attack the person for saying awesome.
It is a common way of dealing with these terrible things we see on a daily basis. It is awesome(sarcastically), and I laugh every time I hear someone got shot or OD’d or drowned while trying to save their cat in a river…or some dumb shit like that. Now that 17 year old will not become a drug dealer or mass murderer by being locked up for a long time. Just sucks an innocent kid had to pay the ultimate price. Let me say that any killing by gun knife or other method is terrible, and we as humans should do what we can to stop it. However banning guns is not the way to solve the problem.
Can I point out that recently a 11 year old killed two adult men that had broken in to her home when her parents were away she protected herself. By the way they were armed I wish I could site the detail but my memory fails me on this but check out the N R A site and I think you can find many examples of this.
Do you think that power hungry people do not exist in this country? Look at the news on any night and you will see countries all over the world were the military is the only one with guns and there are mass killing by the military. Look for the countries that do not enjoy the freedom that we have and you will find that the people are not armed. We are losing it little at a time day by day by well meaning people that govern with there owned self interest at hart.
As a small boy I ember seeing a news report a film from china were the army rounded up a hole village huddled them into a group then would just pick one out of the crowd bind there hands push then to there kneaded placer a large fan that looked like a father in there shirt then shoot then in the back of the head men women young old it did not matter one after the other this I have rebreed all my life.
When I was young there was murders but there was no mass shooting at schools, malls, post offices, workplaces,churches or sporting events.
If you look you can see is simple as the nose on your face these people today that do this things are 1 mostly in to drugs 2 younger than 55 years old 3 came from a generation of people that were deprived from a balanced education. These are the people that have been educated without being thought the 10 commencements and I think that one of them said though sail not kill, if you here this every day for 12 years you have a tendency to be leave.
